The White House said Friday that President Donald Trump is calling for a national emergency in response to a mass shooting at a country music festival in Las Vegas, where at least 59 people were killed and hundreds more wounded.
The president is calling on Congress to pass a sweeping gun control bill and call on governors and state legislatures to pass legislation that will limit gun purchases, a White House official said.
In a tweet Friday morning, Trump called for the immediate establishment of a “National Emergency Commission” to investigate the Las Vegas attack and “to implement national gun control.”
Trump’s tweet also called for a nationwide “national emergency” to be imposed by midnight Sunday to “bring our country together.”
The National Emergency Commission, which is currently under review by the Federal Election Commission, would be tasked with setting up a national commission to review and oversee any laws that are enacted.
A separate effort by Congress to restrict gun purchases is also under review.
On Friday, a senior House Republican said he wants to call for a full-scale review of gun laws after the massacre.
“We have to do something to bring the country together,” Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Kan., told CNN.
“It is not acceptable that in the midst of this tragedy, people can buy a machine gun on the street and then shoot people at a concert.”
The Las Vegas shooting occurred on the heels of a mass killing at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, that killed 12 people.
The shooter was later killed by police, and authorities are investigating the motive behind that shooting.
Trump said during the campaign that he wanted to “get rid of guns” from the country, a position that he has continued to embrace as he seeks re-election.
During his first visit to the country as president, Trump made a similar call for gun control.
“I don’t think we should have guns in this country,” Trump said in May, adding later, “We can’t have a country that allows guns in.”
During his presidency, the United States has had only a handful of mass shootings, most of them in mass shootings such as the one in Las Parkas, Colorado in 2012.
The deadliest mass shooting took place on May 1, 2017, when a gunman opened fire in a crowded outdoor movie theater that left more than 50 people dead.
